Celebrity Speech Competition
On June 12th, a celebrity speech imitation competition was held in the High School Section. Before the competition every student spent about two weeks in searching materials on the Internet, choosing their favorite speech videos and scripts, and then imitating the video and the intonation of the speaker. In this process, the students made great efforts to improve and perfect their speaking skills.
The topics of the speeches include Obama’s farewell speech to his staff and supporters, Speech by The Duchess of Cambridge at the Place2Be Big Assembly for Children’s Mental Health Week, Bill Gates: Unleashing your creativity, Jack Dorsey’s Top 10 Rules For Success, 2013 Commencement Speech by Harvard President Drew Faust, President Obama’s weekly address, Mark Zuckerberg's 2017 Harvard commencement speech, Why Do We Need To Talk To Strangers by Kio Stark, Kate Middleton Sends Her Thoughts To Victims Of Westminster, Theresa May’s speech to the Conservative Spring Forum, Remarks by Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Other students were able to watch the video first and read the printed scripts while watching the students’ performances, which benefited themselves quite a lot.
The judges are ten students and the English teacher, each accounting for 50% of the final score. They graded the performances in the following aspects: content, pronunciation & intonation, fluency, expression and body language, overall performances and time of speech. At last, Ruby, Lucy and Trista won the first three places and were awarded with three books on English speech.
